High demand for apprenticeships: Aurubis welcomes almost 100 young people to the German sites
Hamburg | Thursday, August 6, 2026
- All apprenticeships filled at the Hamburg, Lünen and Stolberg plants as well as at Deutsche Giessdraht in Emmerich
- Aurubis is strategically investing in the experts of tomorrow, providing training in technical, scientific, logistics and business occupations
- Innovative formats such as virtual reality career guidance, social media, and digital communication options give young people a jump start in the metal industry
Aurubis kicked off the 2026 training year with a strong class. A total of 93 young people started their apprenticeship, dual study program, or apprenticeship preparation program at the German sites in Hamburg, Lünen and Stolberg and at Deutsche Giessdraht in Emmerich — a Group subsidiary — during the past few days.
The Hamburg plant welcomed 57 trainees and dual work/study students as well as nine additional young people in the AV 10-Plus program. Offered in cooperation with the Veddel School and the Vocational School for Structural and Mechanical Engineering, the program provides young people with practical experience for their transition to an apprenticeship later. Fifteen trainees started their careers at the recycling site in Lünen, ten in Stolberg, and two at Deutsche Giessdraht.
With this new class, Aurubis is making a targeted investment in its skilled workforce base in Germany. The company is providing vocational training in 14 technical, scientific, logistics and business professions and study programs this year with a focus on developing internal talents over the long term.
Once again, we successfully filled all trainee spots this year. The demand was high. This is nothing to take for granted these days with the skilled labor shortage, and confirms that Aurubis is an attractive employer for many young people. As a leading multimetal company, we supply about 20 strategically important metals that are the foundation for digitalization, the energy transition, electric vehicles, and many more future technologies. This is exactly why it’s so crucial for us to train our own experts.

“We see vocational training as an investment in the future, so I’m pleased that 15 young people will be embarking on their careers with us in Lünen. They can learn up close how modern industry is advancing at one of the leading metal recycling sites. We give them a workplace where they can take on responsibility early on, contribute their own ideas, and actively shape our site’s future,” underlined Aurubis Lünen Plant Manager Verena von Weiss.
“Well trained experts ensure that innovations come to life and industrial production remains successful in the future too. So we are committed to investing in high-quality education and are pleased to welcome ten new apprentices at Aurubis in Stolberg,” said Aurubis Stolberg Managing Director Dr. Benjamin Cappi.
Innovative and digital formats for applicants
Aurubis employs modern methods to attract new apprentices. In Hamburg, where Aurubis is the second largest industrial training provider, students can take a realistic peek into working in metal production using virtual reality technology through the Virtual Hanseatic Apprenticeship Exchange. As one of the first companies to participate, Aurubis is supporting this innovative approach to career guidance that the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce presents at schools and apprenticeship fairs.
Digital communication options round off the apprenticeship marketing efforts. On Instagram and TikTok, apprentices provide authentic glimpses into their workday, the occupations offered, and events. Those who are interested can also conveniently text their questions about apprenticeships, internship opportunities, and the application process through WhatsApp.
Trainers and trainees from the Lünen site interact with potential young workers face to face at a number of apprenticeship fairs. Participants who stand out in these interactions receive one of the limited Golden Tickets — which are given only to a select group of talents. Applicants who include this with their application are automatically invited to participate in the first round of interviews.
The Aurubis site in Stolberg works closely with schools from the region, inviting school classes with a technical focus to the plant for detailed insights into vocational opportunities there.
